 The King's Speech, State Opening and the 1922 Committee

The first episode of Parliament Matters, the Hansard Society's new podcast, is available now wherever you download your podcasts.
In this inaugural episode Mark D'Arcy and Ruth Fox look at:
  • the parliamentary prospects for the Government's new legislative proposals following the King's Speech;
  • the latest news on the future of legislation for HS2; and
  • whether it's time to scrap State Opening at the start of each parliamentary Session.
They also meet up with Lord Norton of Louth to discuss his new book about the Conservative 1922 Committee and whether the selection of party leaders by the party membership is compatible with our system of parliamentary democracy.
Parliament Matters is generously supported by a grant from the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust.

Next episode

We will be releasing Episode #2 this weekend. Mark and Ruth discuss changes on the House of Commons committee corridor following the election of four new Select Committee chairs. They discuss the process for recalling MPs and the number of MPs who have lost the Whip in this Parliament.

Urgent Questions

Also released this weekend is a special episode in which we answer listener's questions about whether Ministerial announcements to the media before they are made to MPs amounts to a contempt of Parliament, how parliamentary reform can be secured, and whether we really need a second Chamber.

If you've got a question you'd like to ask Mark and Ruth send them in and they will try and answer them in a future episode.
